Choosing the Right Game at Clumsy Orc Studios
- No Comments
One of the best things about tabletop gaming is that there’s no single “right” way to play.
Some players want a tight, competitive match. Others want story, atmosphere, and long-term consequences. And plenty of people just want a relaxed game where they can learn, ask questions, and enjoy the hobby without pressure.
At Clumsy Orc Studios, we’ve designed our booking system to reflect that.
When you book a game with us, you can now choose a Game Style that matches how you want to play — so everyone at the table knows what to expect before the first dice are rolled.
Here’s what each option means.
Matched Play – Competitive
This is for players who enjoy a focused, results-driven game.
Competitive Matched Play uses standard matched play rules and missions, with the expectation that both players are bringing well-built lists and playing with intent. Games are played at a steady pace, rules are applied tightly, and the primary goal is to win the mission.
This option is ideal if you’re:
- Practising for events or tournaments
- Testing lists seriously
- Looking for a high-intensity, skill-focused game
If you enjoy clean games and sharp decision-making, this is the one for you.
Matched Play – Narrative
This is where balance meets story.
Narrative Matched Play still uses matched play rules, but the game is framed within a wider context — a campaign, a world, or an ongoing conflict. Missions might have added flavour, terrain may tell part of the story, and the outcome can have consequences beyond just a win or loss.
This option is perfect if you:
- Want your games to mean something
- Enjoy campaign play and evolving storylines
- Like structure, but with atmosphere and stakes
It’s competitive enough to feel fair, but rich enough to feel memorable.
Guided Play
Guided Play is all about learning, support, and enjoyment.
This is a relaxed game style designed for players who are still getting comfortable with the rules, trying a new army, returning after a break, or simply wanting a slower, more conversational game.
In Guided Play:
- Questions are encouraged
- Take-backs are fine
- Pace is flexible
- The focus is on understanding and fun, not winning
It’s welcoming without being patronising, and ideal if you want to build confidence while still getting proper games in.
Why This Matters
Choosing a Game Style isn’t about labels — it’s about shared expectations.
When both players know the tone of the game ahead of time, games run smoother, feel better, and everyone leaves the table wanting to play again. It also helps us match players, events, and tables more effectively, keeping the studio welcoming for veterans and newcomers alike.
